Chipmakers forge alliance for mobile processors

July 29, 2003 – STMicroelectronics and Texas Instruments, along with ARM and Nokia, are joining forces to promote open standards for mobile application processors.

The Mobile Industry Processor Interface (MIPI) Alliance aims to continue the work of the OMAPI standard, a joint effort of TI and STM formed in December 2002. The alliance will work in harmony with other standards bodies such as the Open Mobile Alliance and 3GPP, creating working groups to develop specs in areas such as camera and display interface, software abstraction, communications interface, and system control.

MIPI plans to announce an expanded participant roster by 2003, which is expected to include handset and peripheral manufacturers, semiconductor companies, and software application developers.
