Sales of optical MEMS into segments other than telecom are forecast to grow at a combined annual growth rate of nearly 16 percent during the next years, according to In-Stat/MDR’s “Optical MEMS: Light Speed Ahead.” The report finds the biggest growth potential for the technology is in next-generation imaging and display systems.

The report said that while some companies focusing on optical networking have looked at nontelecom applications as a “last-ditch effort,” developers of the two segments largely have been separate. That’s because the architectures required for displays are different from optical switching.
