Qualcomm sues TI over patents

July 28, 2003 – Qualcomm has filed a complaint against Texas Instruments, alleging that the chipmaker violated a December 2002 patent agreement over wireless semiconductor technology.

Qualcomm won’t say specifically what patents were violated, but TI has stated plans to expand its market share of chipsets based on code division multiple access (CDMA) technology, an area dominated by Qualcomm.

Legg Mason analyst Cody Acree says that the litigation may slow, but won’t prevent, TI’s product plans. “Although the suit will likely garner a significant amount of attention, we don’t believe it alters the opportunity TI has to move aggressively into the CDMA market,” he wrote in a research note to clients.
