Spire gets grant for biomedical nanocoating

Aug. 12, 2003 — Spire Corp. of Bedford, Mass., received a $750,000 federal grant to develop nanosize coatings for orthopedic implants, according to a news release.

The two-year, Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) award from the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases will go toward developing hard, adherent nanocrystalline coatings. Company officials said the coating is designed to reduce wear and extend the implant’s performance.

The Phase II grant will allow Spire to improve its coating properties and demonstrate performance in a joint simulator.

Spire, listed on Nasdaq, closed Monday at 4.19, up from 3.95 Friday.
