Study: Hynix gains in DRAM market

August 14, 2003 – Despite tariffs levied by the US and European Union, Hynix Semiconductor managed to gain on rivals in the DRAM market, according to a new Gartner Dataquest report.

Hynix increased its market share in 2Q03 to 13.7%, up from 12.7% in 1Q03 and 13.4% in 2Q02. Redistribution of sales to China, India, and Eastern Europe helped the company keep its position in the market, but analyst Andrew Norwood said the next several quarters will be more telling of the tariffs’ impact on the company’s business.

In the overall DRAM market, Samsung maintained its lead with 31% market share, up from 30% in 1Q03 and 30.7% in 2Q02, followed by Micron Technology with 18.9% (19.0% in 1Q03, 19.2% in 2Q02), Infineon with 15.4% (no change from 1Q03, 12.9% in 2Q02), and Nanya with 4.4% (4.2% in 1Q03, 3.9% in 2Q02).
