Survey: Utilization crosses 85% mark

August 22, 2003 – Chip factory utilization surfaced above the 85% level in the second quarter, its highest point since 3Q01, and closing in on the 90% mark traditionally signaling investments in new capacity, according to an industry group.

Semiconductor International Capacity Statistics (SICAS) says capacity rose to 85.9%, or 1.31 million silicon wafer starts/week, compared with 82.8% and 1.25 million wafer stars/week in 1Q03. The utilization is at its highest point since 3Q01, said Lehman Brothers analyst Ulrich Pelzer.
