UMC buys out Infineon from JV

August 9, 2003 – United Microelectronics Corp. (UMC) says it will buy Infineon’s 30% stake in their chip manufacturing joint venture for up to $130 million. The deal will raise UMC’s stake in the 12-in. fab in Singapore to 80%. UMC’s cumulative investment in the plant will top $500 million by the end of this year, with capacity planned for 10,000 wafers/month; by the end of 2004 investments will total $1.2 billion.
