BEI selects TI technology for IMU

Sept. 24, 2003 — BEI Technologies Inc.’s Systron Donner Inertial Division picked Texas Instruments Inc.’s (TI) digital signal controller for a MEMS-based inertial measurement unit (IMU), according to a news release.

BEI said TI’s controller allows it to expand its automotive-based MEMS technology into high-performance aerospace and defense applications. The combined technology offers size and cost advantages over competing technology, the release said.

IMUs are used to sense the relative position of a vehicle or aircraft. MEMS technology allows the miniaturization of the IMU through the use of one piece, a micromachined quartz sensor that measures angular rotational velocity.

BEI, listed on Nasdaq, closed Tuesday at 15.14, down from 15.45 Monday. TI, which trades on the New York Stock Exchange, closed Tuesday at 24.11, up from 23.45 Monday.
