CSMC, Chartered forge equipment pact

August 28, 2003 – CSMC, Chartered forge equipment pact
Chartered Semiconductor, Singapore, and CSMC Technology Corp., a 150mm IC foundry in Hong Kong, have signed an agreement whereby Chartered will sell used equipment and technology in exchange for $33 million in cash and shares.

The deal involves the transfer of various 150mm equipment sets from Chartered’s Fab 1 facility in Wuxu, China, involving 0.5-micron, 0.6-micron, and 0.35-micron technologies ranging from analog to high-voltage and Bi-CMOS. The new technologies will boost CSMC’s output of 150mm wafers from 20,000/month to 45,000/month by 2005.

In return, Chartered will get cash and up to an 11.15% stake in CSMC Tech, a new dedicated foundry formed this year by Central Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp. and CR Logic. The deal also accelerates Chartered’s plans to consolidate Singapore fab operations onto the main Woodlands campus, as well as find a manufacturing partner in China.

The companies also are discussing possible future collaboration on 200mm technologies.
