September 2, 2003 – Intel Corp., Santa Clara, CA, has pledged an additional $23 million to Elpida Memory Inc., Tokyo, Japan, a JV between Hitachi and NEC, to help Elpida boost production of its SDRAM chips. The funds will help Elpida boost production of 300mm wafers from 3,000/month to 16,000/month at NEC’s plant in Hiroshima.
Intel, which had previously promised $100 million in the JV, wants the DDR2 SDRAM chips for use with its new microprocessors for high-performance PCs and servers.
