PNI licenses IBM’s atomic force microscope patent

Sept. 16, 2003 — Santa Clara, Calif.-based Pacific Nanotechnology Inc. has licensed IBM’s patent of the fundamental technology for the atomic force microscope, according to a news release.

The U.S. patent was issued to Gerd Binning of IBM Zurich Research Laboratory in 1988 and reissued in 1990. Binnig and Heinrich Rohrer won the Nobel Prize in physics in 1986 for designing the scanning tunneling microscope.
