Xilinx: IBM, UMC neck-and-neck

September 15, 2003 – An executive at chip designer Xilinx Corp. says that Taiwan’s United Microelectronics Corp. and IBM are “equals” in terms of chip manufacturing technology, according to a report in Dow Jones.

Xilinx, a major user of UMC’s 90nm-technology on 300mm wafers, plans to farm out chip production to UMC “into the foreseeable future,” according to senior VP Rich Sevcik, but will continue to use IBM as a second source at the request of its customers.
