Hitachi Digital Graphics (USA) Inc. on Wednesday announced the acquisition, which includes patents and trademarks for high-speed laser processing technology as well as NanoVia’s core development engineering and New Hampshire facilities. Todd Lizotte, former NanoVia vice president and now a principal development engineer for Hitachi, said NanoVia technically is part of Japan-based Hitachi Via Mechanics.

“It’s a very related business,” said Lizotte, who co-founded NanoVia with Orest Ohar in 1999. “That division is a $450 million-a-year business, and they’re No. 1 in their market.”

Hitachi Via Mechanics invested in NanoVia about three years ago and became an anchor customer as well as technology licensee. Terms of the acquisition announced Wednesday were not disclosed.

Hitachi will use NanoVia’s facilities for ongoing research and development. Lizotte said he and Ohar have signed on for two years as principal development engineers to oversee technology transfer and commercialization. They also plan to launch a nanotech-related, product-oriented business early next year, he said.
