Oct. 7, 2003 — IBM has launched an updated line of its ThinkPad laptop computers with models that include MEMS accelerometers in a system to protect data from drops and damage, according to a news release.
The IBM Active Protection System includes a motion sensor that detects acceleration, such as in a fall. The system responds by stopping the hard drive from writing data and temporarily parking, or lifting up the read/write head. The system is designed to prevent hard-drive crashes and data loss, as well as reduce warranty costs.
The system is now available in the ThinkPad R50 and T41 models, the release said.
