NEC, Fujitsu to build Taiwan R&D

October 17, 2003 – Japan’s NEC and Fujitsu are planning to set up R&D centers in Taiwan, according to the Taiwan Economic News.

NEC is pouring nearly $150 million into developing R&D programs in Taipei, with Fujitsu planning a center for early 2004. Sony is also planning to spend upwards of $88 million for a IC R&D center in Taiwan.

To accommodate these and future companies, the Ministry of Economic Affairs will appropriate nearly $3 billion over five years to build and promote six R&D parks in the nation, three of which will involve IC and related industries.
