Transmeta: We’ve plugged chip power leaks

October 15, 2003 – Transmeta Corp., says it has developed software that significantly reduces current leakage in chips.

The LongRun2 software adjusts threshhold voltage up to hundreds of times per second, significantly reducing chiop power consumption. When paired with Transmeta’s new Efficeon chip, current leakage on a computer in standby-mode was slashed from 144 miliwatts to 2 milliwatts.

“It’s the first time that has ever been done in the industry,” boasted Dave Ditzel, Transmeta’s cofounder and CTO.

The technology will be part of the initial 1GHz Efficeon chips being produced by TSMC, with 2GHz versions scheduled to be produced by Fujitsu in 2H04.
