Oki Electric to make its own MEMS

Nov. 17, 2003 — Oki Electric Industry Co. has created a team to commercialize its own line of MEMS sensors, according to Asia Pulse.

The five-person team, located at the Tokyo-based company’s silicon manufacturing unit, will oversee development and uses for new products. Oki is developing accelerometers, and plans to start shipping samples early next year. The first application is expected to be in GPS-compatible mobile phones, the report said.

Oki has traditionally made products developed by other companies, but decided to enter the MEMS business because of anticipated growth. It targets sensor sales of $18.5 million in 2005.
