Picoliter acquired Labcyte in a stock deal, though financial terms were not disclosed. The new, Sunnyvale, Calif.-based firm combines Picoliter’s microfluidic and small-volume liquid handling technologies and Labcyte’s high-volume liquid handling and microwell plate processing.

Elaine Heron, Labcyte’s chief executive officer who held the same post at Picoliter, said changing the name reflects the broader vision of its offerings.

“Small-volume liquid handling … is where our proprietary technology is, but it’s not the whole vision I have for the company. This designates a bigger space,” she said. “Sometimes when you have a technology like this, it takes a little while to get it into the marketplace. … This gives us more traditional products we can give to customers.”
