Report: Sound future for MEMS microphones

Nov. 13, 2003 — MEMS-based microphones will grow from 1 percent of the 1.2 billion microphones sold this year to 20 percent of the 1.6 billion sold in 2006, according to a new report.

“Market Analysis of Acoustic Products: Microphones, Speakers, Codecs and End-Applications,” published by The Information Network, said MEMS devices are breaking into the entrenched market because of their compact and lightweight structure as well as high integration capability.

MEMS microphones from Knowles Acoustics, Akustica Inc. could significantly erode the market share of microphone leaders Panasonic, Hosiden and BSE. Speakers also represent a potentially lucrative market for MEMS makers, the release said.
