IntelliSense vets buy Corning’s MEMS software unit

Dec. 16, 2003 — Original employees of IntelliSense have acquired the MEMS software business unit assets of Corning IntelliSense, which will close early next year.

IntelliSense Software Corp. will continue developing computer-aided design tools for MEMS, including the IntelliSuite line. The company, whose chief executive is Sandeep Akkaraju, includes original creators of the software and employees of IntelliSense before it was acquired in 2000 by Corning Inc. for what was worth $750 million in stock.

Corning announced in September it could not keep the subsidiary going because of the ongoing troubles in the telecom industry. It sold most of its photonics business to Fremont, Calif.-based Avanex Corp in May, and said it would seek a buyer for the software unit.

Fariborz Maseeh left Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1991 to form IntelliSense. He was part of MIT’s MEMCAD group, which had been among the first to create integrated design systems for MEMS.
