Dec. 3, 2003 — Nanogen Inc. has been issued a U.S. patent for producing electronic and photonic devices using nanoscale components.

The company said one of the challenges in producing such devices is integrating the components into larger systems. The patent describes an electric “pick-and-place” process that helps to integrate diverse DNA nanocomponents, according to news release.

The nanofabrication process could be used for making data storage materials, photonic crystal structures, light-emitting flat-panel arrays and displays, and integrated medical diagnostic and biosensor devices.

Nanogen, listed on Nasdaq, was trading early Wednesday morning at 5.34, up from 3.79 Tuesday.
