TSMC opens doors to chip services

November 21, 2003 – TSMC and Omnivision Technologies plan to form a $50 million joint venture to offer backend chip production for image-capturing devices. The investment in the new company, VisEra Technology Co., is part of an overall effort by TSMC to expand its offerings into chip services.

“We can’t ignore the fact that IDM companies, because their technology is integrated, are able to know about problems arising from integration ahead of time,” said Genda Hu, TSMC VP of marketing, in a Reuters report. “We are not just looking at chip manufacturing, but also design and backend production.”

The deal is seen as a volley at IBM, which offers an array of chip design and production services, and has had success in winning business from current TSMC clients.
