Movaz Networks’ MEMS picked for NSF project

Jan. 7, 2004 — Movaz Networks Inc.’s MEMS-based optical switch technology has been selected for a U.S. government optical network project, according to a news release.

The Dynamic Resource Allocation via Generalized MultiProtocol Label Switching Optical Networks Project, also called DRAGON, will explore the ability of optical networks to serve advanced applications in science. Planned uses include acquiring and correlating radio-telescope data in real time and integrating streaming high-definition television, interactive 3-D video and other data for NASA.

Officials with the Norcross, Ga.-based firm said the National Science Foundation-funded project allows the company to demonstrate the benefits of its technology to commercial carrier customers, and could help establish optical networking standards during the next decade.
