The report, published by French market research firm Yole Developpement, finds the gyro market will grow from $314 million to $649 million between 2002 and 2005 — a compound annual rate of more than 25 percent. Accelerometers will grow from $420 million to $560 million — a rate of 13 percent — during the same period.

Both markets are dominated by automotive applications, the report said, but new uses in defense, instrumentation and medicine are expected to boost revenues within the next five years. One of the major challenges to meeting volume and price objectives has been automating manufacturing methods, especially related to packaging and testing.
