ASE to buy NEC plant

February 3, 2004 – Taiwan’s Advanced Semiconductor Engineering Inc. has agreed to acquire NEC Electronics’ IC packaging and testing operation in Takahata, Japan, seen as a move against rival Amkor.

The deal, expected to be completed by June, includes a four-year deal to provide backend manufacturing services to NEC, and potentially other collaborations in production technologies and IP. The new firm, ASE Japan Co. Ltd., will start off with revenues of approximately $165 million in its first year.
