February 27, 2004 – Fujitsu Ltd. is planning to build a new 300mm plant at its existing facility in Tado, Mie prefecture, with production capability of 10,000 wafers/month by spring 2005, according to the Nihon Keizai Shimbun.
The $1.46 billion facility will incorporate 90nm and 65nm process technologies, for system chips used in digital consumer electronics including flat-screen TVs and DVD recorders
Market analysts criticized the move, citing concerns about debt and possible equity financing needs, and a belief that Fujitsu will be behind other chipmakers that are planning to bring 300mm production lines online by late 2004 to avoid an oversupply situation.
