Agilent launches MEMS-enabled phone module

March 9, 2004 — Agilent Technologies Inc. has launched an integrated, MEMS-enabled module for mobile phones.

The company is selling samples of its AFEM-7731 to select mobile phone manufacturers, according to a news release. Agilent said it’s the industry’s first front-end module to combine a power amplifier and a film bulk acoustic resonator duplexer, a vibrating membrane sandwiched onto a silicon substrate that allows two-way talk in a mobile phone.

The integrated module enables manufacturers to produce smaller handsets with greater power efficiency and more functionality, such as cameras or multimedia capability. The AFEM-7731 also can be used in phones with various frequency bands or air interface standards, such as CDMA and GSM.

The company expects to be producing millions of units by the third quarter and in phones for sale later this year.
