March 25, 2004 – NEC Electronics Corp. has signed a deal with Transmeta Corp. to incorporate its LongRun2 technology, which addresses power consumption and leakage, into NEC’s sub-90nm chips. NEC also will take an ownership stake of less than 2% in Transmeta.
The company plans to ship initial chips using Transmeta’s technology in 2005 for use in mobile phone handsets. Also, NEC claimed it could manufacture Transmeta’s Efficeon 90nm low-power processors (currently being produced by Fujitsu) if asked to do so, according to Reuters.
