SIA: We’ll study health risks

March 18, 2004 – The Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA) has agreed to conduct a retrospective epidemiological study to investigate whether workers in US wafer fabs have a higher risk of cancer.

The SIA had been holding off on such a move while researchers at Johns Hopkins determined if such as study would be “scientifically feasible” — i.e., whether there is enough reliable and relevant data to analyze.

The SIA noted that the Bureau of Labor Statistics released data in 2002 showing the incidence of work injuries and illnesses was 1.9 per 100 full-time workers, better than 95% of all other durable goods manufacturing industries surveyed.
