March 10, 2004 – The TFT-LCD industry will overtake the semiconductor industry as Taiwan’s fastest growing and most profitable segment in the next five years, according to predictions from the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA) reported in the China Post.

Six of the world’s 14 LCD production facilities for fifth-, sixth-, and seventh-generation LCD technologies are in Taiwan, where LCD investments will rise 5% in 2004 to top $9.2 billion, the biggest area of IT investment.

MOEA cautioned, however, that the region faces a growing challenge from China, which boasts advantages in terms of government resources, labor, and market demand.
