IBM, Stanford spin together

April 26, 2004 — IBM’s Almaden Research Center and Stanford University have formed a center to research and develop spintronics technology, according to a news release.

The IBM-Stanford Spintronic Science and Applications Center, or SpinAps, seeks to create new materials and devices, such as reconfigurable logic devices, room-temperature superconductors and quantum computers. Spintronics, which uses the “up” or “down” spin of electronics, rather than their charge, can produce properties such as low-power switching and nonvolatile information storage.

SpinAps operates with about six professors from Stanford and an equal number of IBM scientists, as well as graduate students and postdoctoral researchers. Initial funding comes from IBM and Stanford.
