Japanese chipmakers boosting CCD capacity

April 14, 2004 – Sony Corp. plans to boost monthly production capacity of charge-coupled devices (CCDs) at its two facilities in southern Japan by 14% to 9.5 million units/month, according to Reuters.

Also adding capacity are Matsushita Electric Industrial Co Ltd, which plans to quadruple output to 8 million units/month by October, and Toshiba, which expects to bump capacity by 20% to 5 million units/month by the end of September.

iSuppli projects the image sensor market will grow 38% to $5.55 billion in 2004.
