UMCi spends $209 million on equipment

April 27, 2004 – UMCi Pte Ltd., the Singapore-based unit of Taiwan’s United Microelectronics Corp. (UMC), stated it has finalized NT$6.93 billion (US$209 million; US$1 = NT$33.062) in spending on new chipmaking equipment, according to a report from Dow Jones and Company.

In six separate statements to the Taiwan Stock Exchange, UMC said the bulk of the spending for the Singapore plant, NT$2.08 billion, went to ASML Hong Kong Ltd., a unit of Dutch chip-equipment maker ASML Holding N.V.

Another NT$1.61 billion went to Tokyo Electron Ltd.; NT$1.13 billion to Lam Research Corp.; NT$1.04 billion to Nikon Corp.; NT$550.6 million to Applied Materials Asia Pacific Ltd. and NT$525.8 million to Novellus Systems Inc., UMC said.
