Sumitomo to double 300mm output

July 15, 2004 – Sumitomo Mitsubishi Silicon Corp. plans to double production output of 300mm wafers to 400,000 wafers/month by next summer, according to the Nihon Keizai Shimbun.

The 50-50 JV between Mitsubishi Materials and Sumitomo Metal Industries initially said it would spend 30 billion yen to boost output from 150,000 wafers/month in April 2004 to 300,000 wafers/month by mid-2005, but now plans to spend an additional 30 billion yen to take advantage of growing wafer demand.

Sumitomo also wants to catch #1 wafer producer Shin-Etsu, which is planning for 300,000 300mm wafers/month by year’s end.
