Aug. 23, 2004 – The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) has awarded Innovative Micro Technology (IMT) $2.3 million to continue development of a MEMS-based system for purifying human blood stem cells.
Santa Barbara, Calif.-based IMT said the Phase II study allows it to improve the cell processing of the system, for which it received $1.8 million from DARPA in 2002. IMT said the device under development incorporates parallel MEMS devices that rapidly and easily purify cells for therapeutic and research applications.
The project’s goal is to create an immune system outside the body as a test bed for developing protections against agents of bioterrorism, according to a company release.
