Arryx adds infrared ‘tweezer’ to product line

Nov. 8, 2004 – Chicago-based Arryx Inc. has added an infrared product to its line of “laser tweezers,” according to a news release. Arryx’s BioRyx 200 IR system is designed for biological researchers to move and rotate single cells and subcellular components, as well as manipulate large groups of components for complex interaction studies. The objects can be manipulated interactively, or moved along three-dimensional trajectories. Intended applications areas include developing health diagnostic equipment and prototyping of equipment for nanoassembly.

In addition, Arryx recently secured a $5-million equity investment from Haemonetics Corp., a Braintree, Mass.-based maker of automated blood-processing systems. Under a separate licensing deal, Haemonetics will make payments of up to $12.5 million if Arryx meets certain commercial development milestones. Haemonetics has exclusive worldwide license to Arryx’s technologies for use in blood processing. If the firms’ joint development projects are successful, Haemonetics will make and market systems incorporating the technology, as well as make royalty payments to Arryx.
