Nanogen funds co-founder’s nano research

Dec. 1, 2004 – Nanogen Inc. is giving a $300,000 grant to support the nanotechnology research of Michael Heller, company co-founder and engineering professor at University of California, San Diego (UCSD).

The two-year funding will target Heller’s work using electric field-based technology for nanofabrication and assembly of nanostructures, as well as for integrating nanostructures with other devices. The money will advance applications related to intellectual property held by Nanogen and the university, while the San Diego-based firm focuses on commercial products for medical diagnostics, according to a news release.

Nanogen’s portfolio includes more than 40 U.S. patents or patent applications based on Heller’s intellectual property, 10 of which are related to nanofabrication work he conducted while employed by the company. Nanogen will have a priority position to obtain any IP rights developed under the deal with UCSD, the release said.
