Rochester touts optics proficiency

Jan. 24, 2005 — The U.S. Council on Competitiveness, the Infotonics Technology Center Inc. and Greater Rochester Enterprise Inc. named the Rochester, N.Y., region as a model innovation “hot spot” for optics while saying the Infotonics center, currently a New York state center of excellence, should become a national center for photonics and microsystems.

The Infotonics center was funded with $114 million in investment from Corning Inc., Eastman Kodak Co., Xerox Corp., New York State, the federal government and 20 universities, according to a news release.

“What SeMaTech did for semiconductors, Infotonics seeks to do for optics, photonics and microsystems,” said David Smith, CEO of the Infotonics center, in a prepared statement.
