MEMS Industry Group releases ’05 report

Feb. 9, 2005 — The MEMS Industry Group (MIG), a Pittsburgh-based trade association representing the MEMS and microstructures industries, announced the release of its latest report.

The publication, titled “2005 Industry Report — Focus on Accelerated Lifetime Test”, includes findings and recommendations from working groups at the MIG’s conference, METRIC 2004.

The groups noted a critical lack of MEMS characterization tools and subsequent impact on the successful commercialization of MEMS devices, especially for smaller companies. An in- depth analysis of an industry-wide MEMS survey on accelerated lifetime test revealed that most MEMS designers and suppliers perform such tests but that most tests are custom-designed to meet customer requirements.

The report also found that there were more announcements by end-use customers about the integration of MEMS into their products than ever before. MIG’s quarterly surveys found that while most companies are still shipping small units they are making slightly more revenue off of their MEMS products this year and are looking to hire more people in the coming months.
