May 16, 2005 — Smith & Nephew’s U.S. Advanced Wound Management division based in Largo, Fla., announced today that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has given clearance of its newest absorbent antimicrobial barrier dressing, ACTICOAT Moisture Control. The wound care product features nanocrystalline silver technology that provides antimicrobial barrier protection.
ACTICOAT Moisture Control was developed through a collaboration between Smith & Nephew and Nucryst Pharmaceuticals. Nucryst, owned by Westaim Corp. of Calgary, Alberta, uses a nanotechnology process that allows it to impregnate its dressings with nanoscale silver crystals. Smith & Nephew is a medical technology business specializing in advanced wound management.
