May 13, 2005 – Sony Corp. plans to launch flat-panel television sets equipped with a new microprocessor codenamed “Cell” as early as fiscal 2006, Managing Director Takao Yuhara said in a recent interview with Jiji Press.
The Cell microprocessor is a high-performance multicore microprocessor being developed by Sony, Sony Computer Entertainment Inc., Toshiba Corp., and IBM Corp.
The next-generation chip realizes a processing speed as fast as that of a supercomputer, and is said to be fit for digital consumer electronics, such as flat-panel TVs, game consoles and personal digital assistance handsets.
The Cell microprocessor will also be mounted on the next-generation PlayStation game console that Sony Computer Entertainment plans to launch in the second half of the current business year to March 2006.
