Sumitomo Chemical buys Dow’s LEP business

May 19, 2005 — Sumitomo Chemical Co. Ltd. purchased the LUMATION* Light-Emitting Polymers (LEPs) business from Dow Chemical Co., the companies announced on Wednesday. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Sumitomo Chemical develops fluorescent and phosphorescent Light-Emitting Polymers based on the company’s display material and conducting polymer technology. Sumitomo Chemical claims its blue-color material is a more cost effective production process for large-sized displays than the vacuum deposition method used for small-molecular organic light-emitting diodes. The company is also developing new materials such as dendrimers in cooperation with Cambridge Display Technology Limited, a U. K. company.
