Waters Corporation named Frost & Sullivan’s leading analytical instrumentation company of the year

NAPLES, Fla.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–May 25, 2005–Frost & Sullivan will present its 2005 Leading Analytical Instrumentation Company of the Year Award at tonight’s third annual Excellence in Industrial Technologies Banquet to Waters Corporation in recognition of the company’s outstanding contribution to the analytical and scientific instrumentation market.

Focused commitment to various end user industries has helped Waters maintain its leading position in the world’s analytical instrument industry since 1958. The company’s products are a mainstay of scientific laboratories all over the world, and are critically important for the development and manufacture of thousands of products and in helping ensure the safety of our food supplies and the cleanliness of our environment. Its customers are household names in the areas of pharmaceuticals, personal care products, consumer electronics, automobiles, foods, and beverages.

An innovator in its field, Waters is aiming to change the name of the game in liquid chromatography (LC) with the introduction of the award-winning Ultra Performance Liquid Chromatography (UPLC) technology. It provides scientists with greater throughput, more sensitivity, and greater resolution than the available high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The benefits to laboratories include higher productivity, more information per unit of time, as well as savings in labor and material costs.

The company’s Alliance HPLC system has become the new standard for performance and ease of use in the industry. Several end users have accepted these systems as the most trustworthy and accurate devices available in the market.

“Waters’ HPLC products have been used in a wide spectrum of applications including drug discovery, development of new manufacturing methods, and the purity and potency assurance of new drugs,” say Frost & Sullivan program manager Kiran Unni. “Water and air quality testing, applications in chemical and petrochemical industries, and research and development (R&D) in universities and government agencies are some other areas of their deployment.”

Waters has developed an exceptionally strong position by integrating mass spectrometry (MS) with its liquid chromatography systems. The introduction of the Quattro Premier tandem quadrupole, Q-Tof Premier, LCT Premier, GCT Premier time-of-flight mass spectrometers and AutoSpec Premier magnetic sector mass spectrometers have placed the company at the forefront of the MS market.

Waters has carved a niche for itself in the analytical instrumentation market, where only fine differences exist between the competing HPLC products. Some of its dramatic initiatives that distinguish the company in the analytical instrumentation market include deeper penetration into emerging and existing regions and steady sales growth for all its different product divisions over the past four to five years.

“There has been a greater emphasis on services and application support offerings with the 2005 introduction of Waters’ Global Services including asset management, relocation, and remote diagnostics services,” observes Unni. “Service revenue has grown steadily over the last decade and accounted for 27% of total revenue in 2004.”

Waters worked hard on the acquisition and integration of the informatics companies in 2004. This has enhanced the company’s position as a true informatics provider offering clients a broader portfolio of information management products compared to any other industry participant.

“Waters has mastered the method of providing solutions in the form of advanced scientific techniques, instruments, and services that also aid the analysis and utilization of the information these solutions garner,” notes Unni. “Sound investment in R&D of new techniques and their successful acceptance is likely to further improve the company’s position and strengthen its role in the analytical instrumentation industry.”

Frost & Sullivan presents its Company of the Year Award to the company that has demonstrated excellence in all operations — business development, competitive strategy, and leadership — in its industry. The Award recognizes its outstanding management, consistent growth, and positive social and economic impact on local and national communities and customers. It also recognizes exceptional customer service, which is crucial to achieve enterprise success.

Held in Naples, Fla., Frost & Sullivan’s Excellence in Industrial Technologies Awards Banquet honors world-class companies for outstanding performance and achievements in their respective industries. An annual event, the banquet recognizes the quality and merit of distinguished individuals and companies.
