Matsushita to build new chip assembly plant in China

July 15, 2005 – Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. said Thursday it has started construction of a new semiconductor assembly plant in China to meet surging demand, said Jiji Press.

The major Japanese electronics firm will spend 10 billion yen on the new plant, which will start mass production in April 2006 as part of Matsushita’s plans to expand its local subsidiary, Suzhou Matsushita Semiconductor Co.

The new plant, to be located some 5km from the local unit in Suzhou, will produce semiconductors for mobile phones and other digital consumer electronics, as well as advanced chip products such as ICs.

Completion of the new facility will increase Suzhou Matsushita’s annual chip products output to 7 billion units in 2007, from the current level of 2 billion units.
