Obducat stamps out agreement with Samsung

Aug. 10, 2005 — Obducat AB, a Swedish maker of tools for micro- and nanotechnology, announced it has entered into an agreement with Samsung Electronics regarding stampers for the development of advanced optical discs.

Under the agreement, Obducat will deliver stampers to Samsung, which will use them for the development of its next generation Blu-ray DVD format. The storage capacity of the new format is expected to be 100GB per layer, in comparison with today’s capacity of 25GB.

Obducat said that pending a successful outcome of the development work it could supply additional production technology to be used in making optical storage media.

The company also said that in order to reallocate the resources necessary to pursue the Samsung joint development activities it will terminate similar work currently underway in partnership with TDK for developing patterned media for hard drives. Other ongoing activities with hard drive makers will continue unabated.
