Silicon wafer shipments back in business in 2Q05

August 26, 2005 – Total worldwide silicon wafer area shipments rebounded nearly 10% in 2Q05 to 1606 million square inches (MSI), nearly even with levels from a year ago, thanks to increasing demand for 300mm and 200mm wafers, according to SEMI’s Silicon Manufacturers Group (SMG) in its quarterly analysis of the silicon wafer industry. It’s the sixth straight month of shipments >1400 MSI, and just the third time in the past five years (joining 2Q04-3Q04) of >1600 MSI.

“After reaching a cyclical low point in the first quarter, silicon shipments clearly recovered in the second quarter,” stated Makoto Tsukada, chairman of SEMI SMG and GM of Shin-Etsu Handotai Co. Ltd. “Based on increasing demand, 300mm unit shipments remain strong, while 200mm wafer shipments are close to peak shipment levels,” he added.
