Japan ministry to develop high-tech firefighter uniform

September 12, 2005 – The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) and the Fire and Disaster Management Agency will use nanotechnology to develop a new firefighters’ uniform. The new uniform will offer enhanced breathability and is 20-30% lighter than the existing type, reported Asia in Focus.

METI and the agency will develop a light, hollow, and highly fire-resistant fiber using nanotechnology and a special weaving technology that will protect firefighters exposed to ultrahigh flames for more than 10 seconds.

They aim to fit firefighters with the new uniform by fiscal 2010.
