Toshiba and NEC to ally on 45nm logic process technology

November 9, 2005 – Toshiba Corp., Tokyo, Japan, and NEC Electronics Corp. have entered into an agreement to co-develop 45nm CMOS logic process technology, allowing the companies to “share burdens and accelerate development, while raising system LSI performance and quality,” according to a joint statement.

Under the terms of the agreement, the work will be performed at Toshiba’s Advanced Microelectronics Center in Yokohama. The companies plan to integrate process technologies they have developed individually, and also will separately decide how to handle the development of value-added and differentiated process technologies. The companies have also discussed comprehensive collaboration, in design environments and product development, as well as manufacturing joint efforts that would target more efficient usage of capital investment and increased capacity utilization rates.
