PowerChip buys idle Macronix 300mm lines

January 19, 2006 – Macronix International Co. Ltd. has agreed to sell its idle 300mm facility Fab 3, along with cleanroom and adjunctive equipment, to PowerChip Semiconductor Corp., a deal reportedly worth $166 million.

Under terms of the deal, PowerChip will be able to expand Fab 3’s capacity to 35,000 wafers/month, and set aside an undisclosed amount of 300mm capacity for Macronix. The two firms also will also collaborate on 90nm- and below nonvolatile memory/flash process technologies.

PowerChip is eager to secure needed capacity for contract production of NAND flash memory chips for Renesas, in order to ease a production shortage at its 200mm fab; its two 300mm operations are already dedicated for DRAM production, according to the Taiwan Economic News.
