Candesce(R) hygienic food packaging added to Potlatch’s bleached paperboard line

February 2, 2006 — /BUSINESS WIRE/ — LEWISTON, Idaho — Hygienic Food Packaging Paperboard (HFP), designed for food packaging applications where product purity and cleanliness are paramount, is being added to Potlatch Forest Products Corporation’s line of Candesce(R) branded bleached paperboard grades, the company announced today.

Potlatch Forest Products Corporation is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Potlatch Corporation (NYSE: PCH).

The clay-coated, bleached white paperboard is Food and Drug Administration (FDA) compliant and produced on the company’s No. 2 board machine at Lewiston, Idaho. The No. 2 machine is equipped with stringent process controls and equipment specifically designed for paperboard cleanliness, which is critical for food packagers concerned about harmful contaminants and bacteria. Paperboard produced on Lewiston’s No. 2 machine has been used by converters around the world for years in liquid packaging applications demanding the highest of cleanliness controls.

“We recognize the growing need of all food manufacturers and their converting partners to communicate through their packaging the great care they take in producing and delivering healthy, nutritious and safe food products. Candesce HFP paperboard is a substrate uniquely positioned to deliver this message,” said Chris Elskamp, Product Manager, Potlatch Forest Products Corporation. Candesce HFP is available in calipers ranging from 10 to 26 point, and may be manufactured with or without polyethylene coating. For more information about Candesce, check the product website at

Elskamp also noted that in response to customer concerns that paperboard products originate from well-managed forests, Potlatch’s forestlands are all third-party certified by both the Forest Stewardship Council(R) (FSC) and the Sustainable Forestry Initiative(R) (SFI). In addition, the Lewiston pulp and paperboard operations are chain-of-custody certified by FSC.

Potlatch is a real estate investment trust with 1.5 million acres of timberlands in Arkansas, Idaho, Minnesota and Oregon and 14 manufacturing facilities.
